Attendance Percentage: How Many Classes Can You Miss Under the 75% Rule?

Calculate your attendance percentage, how many classes you must attend in a row to reach 75%, and how many you can still miss this term, with clear examples.

Attendance Percentage: How Many Classes Can You Miss Under the 75% Rule?

Most Indian colleges and universities expect at least 75% attendance in each subject before a student can sit the final exam. The rule is simple; tracking it during a busy term is not. Here are the three calculations students actually need, worked through with real numbers.

1. What is my attendance right now?

Attendance % = classes attended ÷ classes held × 100

If you attended 52 of 72 classes: 52 ÷ 72 × 100 = 72.22%. That is below 75%, and you have missed 20 classes.

2. How many classes in a row to get back to 75%?

Each class you attend adds one to both the attended and the held count, so you cannot just add the missing percentage. You need the smallest number x where:

(attended + x) ÷ (held + x) ≥ 0.75

With 52 of 72: (52 + x) ÷ (72 + x) ≥ 0.75 gives x ≥ 8. Attend the next 8 classes without a break and you are at 60 of 80, exactly 75%.

The general shortcut: x = (0.75 × held − attended) ÷ 0.25, rounded up. That is 4 × (0.75 × held − attended), or (3 × held − 4 × attended) when the target is 75%.

3. How many can I still miss this term?

This is the question that helps you plan. You need the total number of classes in the term.

Say the term has 120 classes, 70 have been held and you attended 50.

  • Needed for the term: 75% of 120 = 90 classes
  • Still needed: 90 − 50 = 40
  • Classes left: 120 − 70 = 50
  • So you can miss 10 more, at most

Your current attendance is 71.43%, and if you attend every remaining class you would finish at 83.33%.

Planning tips that actually help

  • Check attendance every week, not at the end of the month. Recovering from 72% is easy; recovering from 60% may be impossible.
  • Keep your own record. Portal updates can lag, and mistakes happen.
  • Use your “spare” absences for real needs, not early in the term. Illness doesn’t schedule itself.
  • Practical and lab sessions are often counted separately and are harder to make up.

Different targets

Some institutions use 80% or 85%, and some schools ask for 75% across the year rather than per subject. The same formulas work; just change the target. The calculators let you set any percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Are medical leaves counted in attendance?

Many colleges adjust attendance for approved medical leave or official duty, but the rules differ. Submit certificates on time and ask your department how they are counted.

Is the 75% rule calculated per subject or overall?

Usually per subject, and sometimes separately for theory and practical classes. Check your university’s regulations.

What happens if I fall below 75%?

Depending on your institution, you may be barred from the end-term exam in that subject, asked to pay a condonation fee, or allowed to make it up. Talk to your faculty early.
